Tips, Tips, Tips

Search Engine helpers:

Help refine what you're looking for. If you do a search for John Kennedy, and you put it in just like that, you'll end up finding site with John Jones, Ted Kennedy, Kennedy Space Center...all SORTS of stuff.
However, by using these symbols in your search, it'll help you refine more of what you're looking for
Symbol Reason Example
+ Both words MUST appear Bear +Alaska
- word must NOT appear Bear -Brown -Black
" " Exact word phrases "Brown Bears in Alaska"
NEAR words must appear within 10 words of each other Bears NEAR Alaska

Search with Goggle as a default

When using the Search button on the IE toolbar, you have several choices. However, I use Goggle a lot and would like that to be my default search engine. Here's how you can do the same:
Open an IE window. In the Address bar type in:
http://www.google.com/google.reg
Press the enter key.
When the dialog box opens, choose Save To Disk and save it in a location for safe keeping to back up.
Go to that file and double click on it and choose Yes to add it to the registry.

View a page with it's most recent updates

If you're viewing a page that you think may have changed since you last opened it, press the Refresh button to get the latest and greatest version of that page. Whenever you press Refresh, IE looks to the server to see if the page has been updated.

Web Page shortcut on the desktop

Want a shortcut to your favorite Web site, right on your desktop? Click and hold right on the icon at the beginning of the address line, then drag it to the desktop and release the click.

Printing without internet address & title on the paper

Tired of seeing that URL and document title at the top of every Web page you send to the printer? Or the page, date, and time at the bottom? Pull down the File menu, choose Page Setup, and under Header and Footer, remove all the garbage you see in the white boxes for Headers And Footers Click OK, and now try printing something.

Printing Options

If you want to print a page your viewing that has frames, and you'd like to print the whole thing just as it appears on the screen, then choose File, Print. (You may have to click on an Options tab first here). At the bottom of the print dialog box, make your selection from the area labeled Print Frames.

1. As Laid Out On Screen: this will make your printout look just like the Web page you're printing.
2. Only the Selected Frame: that's all you'll get--just the frame that's currently selected.
3. All Frames Individually: you'll get a printed page for each frame displayed at the Web site.
Then click on OK to start your printing.

To have the background print also, you will need to first go to View, Internet Options, Advanced (tab), scroll down to Printing and place a checkmark in the box for Print Background Colors and Images. Just make sure that you go back and change it when you're done (unless you always want to print the background on all your prints.

Printing long web pages on 1 piece of paper

To have a quick copy of a long web page onto one piece of paper (like just to keep for a quick reference), in your program, click on Print. Select your printer, then click on Preferences, then the Layout (or maybe Features) tab. There's probably a box to put a check in for Multiple Pages.
Put the check in the box for Multiple Pages Per Sheet (or whatever it says), and make your choice of how many pages you want on one piece of paper.

Printing with less ink - No Background image printed

You don't really need the background image when you print a web page...you just need the information (and maybe the pictures).
So, change the option:
Go to Tools, Internet Options, then click on the Advanced tab
Scroll down to where the Printing options are and ensure that the box is NOT checked for Print background colors and images.

Web Page sent right to someone (pictures and all)

Boy, now this is an easy one. You don't have to send someone the URL address so they can go to the site...all you have to do is send them the page.

When you are at a page, Click on File, Send, Page by E-Mail. A message window will open up with everything right there ready to go.

Note: some pages can't be sent by e-mail, but you'll get a message stating that the URL address will be sent instead. Also, if you are off-line when reading, you won't be able to view the images.

Viewing Pages faster

One way to surf the Web a little faster is to do it without graphic images. Believe it or not, many times you can do just fine without those cool but time-consuming pictures.

Go to View, Options, Advanced (tab) and scroll down and take the checkmark off of Show Pictures.

S is for a secure site

A URL that begins with https:// (instead of http://) indicates that it comes from a secure server.

Clear your Cache of pictures/images you've seen

Cache is a temporary file on your computer of each and every page and image you've visited when on the internet. It takes up space on your computer. Get rid of it periodically.

Go to Tools, Internet Options, (or Options, Internet Options)
In the second section for Temporary Internet Files, click on the Delete Files button. That will clean up your computer.

Link verification for your web page

Here's a URL address you can utilize to ensure that your links are working properly as well as structured properly. First click on the link below, then click on Single Page toward the top of the site.
Type your URL address and click on Go http://www.imagiware.com/RxHTML/

Saving Images you see on the web

Every once in while when you're Web surfing, you come across an image or graphic that you just have to keep for all eternity. Here's a quick way to save that image (.GIF or .JPEG) to a disk. Point your cursor at the image and click the right mouse button. From the context menu that appears in the pop up box, select Save image as, which opens the Save As dialog box. Just enter the location and name for the image, then click Save. That's it, the image is all yours.

Saving Images Problem (.bmp only choice)

When you can't right click on an image and choose Save As and save the image in anything but .bmp format, it's time to dump your temporary internet files.
Go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup.
Select only the option to delete Temporary Internet Files, NOT the option to Compress Old Files. Then do it. You should then be able to save your images as the format they are (.jpg, .gif...or whatever it is)

Wallpaper your desktop on the fly

Here's how to make it your computer's wallpaper quicker than you can say, "Pass the paste." Once again, point your mouse on the image and click the right mouse button. From the context menu that appears in the pop-up box, select Set as Wallpaper (or Set As Background). The image is immediately set as the wallpaper.

Viewing with different fonts or size fonts

To change the font size for all web pages you look at:
Click on View, Text Size and choose a smaller or larger size
Or you can change the entire font style from Times New Roman to something else
Click on Tools, Internet Options, then click on the General tab (if necessary), then click on the button at the bottom for Fonts.
In the Fonts dialog box, I recommend that you change ONLY from the box at the left for Web Page Font.
Click on OK twice.
If you decide to go back to the original, then change the font back to Times New Roman

This won't work on certain pages, but others it will. It'll all depend on how the web master coded the page. If the page is set for default font, you'll see you new ones you changed to. However, if the web master forced the font to be in Arial, Times New Roman, or any other font, then you'll see THEIR font, not your new one.

Children and where they've been on the internet?

Click on the History button on your toolbar. Then start clicking on the items that show up on the left side from the list that will show up in Interent Explorer

Navigating without a mouse

Give your arm a break. Instead of reaching out your arm using your mouse to click your way down a document, use your keyboard. All you need to do is press some buttons: Page Up or Page Down: Just like a word processor, it takes you up/down one screen page at a time. Ctrl+Home or Ctrl+End: Also like a word processor, it takes you to the beginning/end of a document.

Reload faster

Try this one out, even though you may not believe it. I've tried it and it really works.

Press and hold the Shift key before you press the Reload button. This will make Netscape reload the page faster.

Hard to believe? Give it a try.

Two Internet Explorer windows

Say you have a page that you don't want to loose. Right click on the link you want to try and go to, then select Open In New Window.

You can also select File, New, Window and go directly to a different page while your first one is loading.

Scrolling up and down looks bad for you?

If you find that when you scroll up/down a page, it starts to look a bit jerky, then you can adjust this so it will be better.

To fix it (it's not a bug, by the way), choose Tools, Internet Options and click on the Advanced tab. Now deselect the Use Smooth Scrolling check box and click Apply, then OK.

Copying a picture when disconnected

You can copy a picture while you're connected to the Internet by right-clicking on a picture and choosing Save Picture As and save it where you want.

But what if you've disconnected and you remember you saw a picture from yesterday. Just check in a few different places:
C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Windows\Temp\Temporary Internet Files
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files XP Users
Find the picture you want and select Edit, Copy, Yes. Then go and click on a folder of your choice then click on Edit, Paste. That image is now saved in your own folder.

Toolbars that are un-needed/un-wanted (IE)

If you don't like all of those toolbars, click on View, Toolbars. All the ones that are presently showing will have a checkmark next to them. Just click on the one you don't want to make the checkmark go away.

Hint: You can make the buttons smaller by choosing View, Toolbars, Customize, then change at the bottom to read No Text Labels. You can always put them back with the same procedures.

Links Toolbar edited

You can have your own preset buttons for your quick link to a web page. I personally have links to GeoCities File Manager and Carney Creations (to name a few).
Here's an example:

Go to the page you want to have a button for. Then click on Favorites, Add To Favorites, choose Create In, then double-click on Links. You can also remove these through a Windows Explorer or by choosing Favorites, Organize Favorites. Since most of these will have the generic IE icon, just right click on any of the icons on your Links toolbar and choose Properties. Then click on Change Icon. They'll make more sense when you look at them.

After you change the icons, you can even move them around. Just click on the button and drag it over to the new spot.

Auto-Redial into your ISP

If you are using an ISP (Internet Service Provider), you can have Windows automatically re-dial for you (incase, for example, the line is busy). By default, Windows disables auto-dial.

To enable it, double-click on My Computer, Double-click on Dial-Up Networking. Now click once on your connection icon for your ISP. Then click on Connections (on the menu bar) and choose Settings. Place a check mark in the box for Redial and specify how many times it should try and how long to wait between re-dialing.

Automatic Dialing

You have an icon for starting Internet Explorer. When you click on it, it dials automatically. Well, let's say you don't WANT it to. How do you stop it?

Go to My Computer and double click on Dial-Up Networking. Now click on Connections, Settings, then select the circle for Don't Prompt to Use Dial-Up Networking. Then click on OK.

The next time you run Internet Explorer, it will dial automatically for you.

This works both ways. If it already dials automatically for you, and you DON'T want it to, then instead of selecting Don't Prompt, select Prompt To Use....

Finding a site you visited yesterday

Yesterday you visited a site but didn't bookmark it. Today you need to back to that site because there was some information you wanted. Or you just decided that you want to bookmark it.

Just click on the History button on your Toolbar. This will open up a frame on the left side of your browser. Now click once on the day of the week where that site would be. A drop-down list will appear of different main addresses. Scroll through the list of the homepage listings. Then click on one of them. Another drop-down list will appear. Just keep clicking the sites until you see the page in question.

Many of these sites can be viewed even if you are off line, pictures included.

Favorites Disappearing from the list

If you find that some of your Favorites listings are disappearing, it could be because IE6 (but may appear in IE5 or IE5.5). Check it out:
Go to Tools, Internet Options, click on the Advanced tab.
In there, look for a line that says "Enable Personalized Favorites Menu"
Remove the check mark

Favorites: Quickly add a link - to your Favorites list or even the Desktop

This is put in more simple terms on how to "drag it to the favorites list"

Look where the internet address is (such as: http://www.ncats.net) At the very beginning of that line (still in the white box), you can see a small white icon with the IE logo on it.

Now, when you are at the page you want to add to the favorites with fewer steps, click and hold on that little icon and drag it to Favorites (on your menu bar) and the drop down list will appear...but don't let go yet. You can drag it down to somewhere you want to put it...even in a sub-folder. When you found a place, just let go of the mouse.

If you make a mistake and put it in the wrong place, just go to Favorites, Organize Favorites and move it to the place you actually wanted to put it.

You can even drag it to your desktop to have a shortcut to that page on your desktop

Transfer Dial-Up Networking Information to another computer

Transfer Dial-Up information to another computer Setting up your internet connection on a new computer can take time. If you got a new computer and now need to set up the new computer with the internet, copy the settings from the older computer and transfer them to the new. Here's how:

Open a Windows Explorer and click on the very top where it says My Computer. On the right side double click on Dial-Up Networking.
Put a floppy disk in, then on the right side, right click and hold on the connection you want to copy. Drag it over to the floppy disk and choose Copy Here.

On the new computer now: copy that file back into the Dial-Up Networking folder inside My Computer.
Open the Dial-up Networking folder, click on the connection you just put in there. Then click on Connections, Settings, make sure that the check is in the box for Prompt to use Dial-Up Networking. Click OK.
Right-click on that new connection now and choose Properties. Choose the modem you now have in your new computer from the drop down list.

If you don't want to get the dialog box for the connecting, then go back and now remove the check for Prompt To Use Dial-Up Networking.

Backup the Internet Connection settings

Keep a backup of all of your settings for connecting to the internet. Then if you have to re-format your computer (or get a new one), you can use this procedure to put it all back together.

Do so at your own risk...because this is in the Regedit
Open Regedit and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\RemoteAccess. On the left side, click on the word RemoteAccess to select it, then choose Registry, Export Registry File.
When the Export Registry File dialog box appears, type a name and choose a location to save the information and save it.

To put it all back together after reformatting (or putting it on the new computer, just double click on that file and choose Yes to continue to put it in the Registry.

History on your Start Menu

It's nice to get back to a page you visited 2 days ago, but you can't find it now. Well, put your History folder on your Start menu and traverse that quickly:
XP: Open a Windows Explorer and go to the folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\
On the right side, RIGHT CLICK and HOLD...as you're holding your click drag it down to the Start button and KEEP HOLDING...the start menu will pop up....KEEP HOLDING....let the All Programs pop up...KEEP HOLDING....drag up toward the top THEN RELEASE the click and choose Create Shortcut Here.
Other Versions: Right-click the Start button and choose Open. Next, right-click in the Start Menu window and choose New, Folder. Name the folder
URL History folder.{FF393560-C2A7-11CF-BFF4-444553540000}
and press Enter.

Now you can just click on the Start button and you'll see a link to your History folder where you can get back to those internet pages you saw before.

Popup image for Print/Email/Save...be GONE!

That pop up picture that shows in your Internet Explorer once in a while...well, it can be annoying at times. You know...the one that shows 4 buttons on it for Save, Print, Email and Open My Pictures folder. It doesn't show up on tiny images...just larger ones that are 200 pixels wide or more.
It looks like this:

You can make it go away for good (or until you go back and tell it to do it again) by doing this:
Internet Options, click on the Advanced tab.
Scroll down to the Media section
UNcheck the box for Enable Image Toolbar
click on OK (and you'll have to close Internet Explorer then open it again for the affects to take place.
Boom...they're gone!

Title bar in IE changed to what YOU want it to say

If you look at the top bar of the Internet Explorer (IE) window, right now, it probably says something like "Windows XP Tips - Microsoft Internet Explorer".
I've changed mine...and so can you.
Mine now says: Windows XP Tips - Provided by Tracy's Computer
Here are 2 examples of the before and after changes when visiting Microsoft's site:

Here's how you can change yours.
Click on Start, Run, then type regedit
Navigate your way to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
On the right side, right click and choose New, String Value
Type: Window Title
Press the key twice.
Type in whatever you want the title bar to read...like I have mine: Provided by The Carney's
Click on OK, and then close Regedit
Next time you open a IE window, you'll see your change.

Passwords to stop being remembered

When you enter a user name and password, Internet Explorer may ask if you want it to remember the password. Click on Yes and it will automatically fill in the password next time you enter that user name.

But if you check "Don't offer to remember any more passwords", you won't be asked again. Now you want to stop that remembering...here's how:
Go to Tools, Internet Options. Click on the Content tab, then click on the AutoComplete button.
Put the check in the box for "Prompt me to save passwords"

To delete an individual passwords you've already saved, go to the log-on box on that Web page and double-click. Your saved AutoComplete entries will drop down. Use the arrow keys to scroll to the one you want to delete, and press the Delete key.

AutoComplete turned off completely

If you want AutoComplete turned off, and do NOT want to be bugged by the annoying reminder dialog box, you can edit the registry
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel
You'll probably be missing Internet Explorer and Control Panel...just create them. Control Panel will be a subkey of Internet Explorer
If it's already there, then on the right side, double click on the DWORD value named FormSuggest
If it's not there, create it (New, DWORD Value and name it FormSuggest)
Set the value to 1
Close the registry

Google with more results

If you use Google toolbar for searching, you can have it show more than 10 listings in your results at a time
Click on Google Links on the toolbar
Click on Search Preferences
Toward the bottom change the results from 10 to 30 (or more)

Internet Options available only to system administrator

I copied this tip from PCMagazine tips that I get in email...just in case **I** need to use it someday
If you can't get to Internet Options because of "restrictions" and you need to contact the "system administrator
"There are several possible causes of this problem, but we'll start with the simplest potential fix. Launch REGEDIT from the Start menu's Run dialog. Navigate to HKEY_ CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\ Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ Restrictions. If you don't find the key, look for the same key but starting in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. In the right-hand pane, look for a value named NoBrowser Options. If this value exists, delete it and restart your computer.

If this doesn't work, the next step is to try IE's repair facility. Launch Add or Remove Programs from the Control Panel. Find IE in the programs list, click on it, and then click on the Change/ Remove button ( Figure 3 ). You should see three options; choose Repair Internet Explorer. When the process is complete, check whether the problem is still present.

If the problem persists, the "phantom administrator" glitch can also be caused by a missing or corrupted Inetcpl.cpl file. By default, this file resides in C:\Windows\System32. You can try to extract a fresh copy of the file from your Windows XP CD. It may be easier, however, to locate a friend or colleague who has the same version of IE and Windows XP as you do and just copy the file from his system to yours."

Updated Web Page

In order to be sure that you are seeing the most recent information of a web page when you go to a web site, you must make a settings correction.
In Internet Explorer, click on Tools, Internet Options
In the middle section for "Temporary Internet files" click on the button for "Settings..."
Ensure the check is in the top box for "Every time you start Internet Explorer".

Modem Silenced

There are actually TWO places to silence that modem so you don't hear that loud noise.
#1 Start, Settings, Control Panel, Double click on Modem.
Click on the Modem tab and then click on Properties. Click on the Modem tab again and slide the volume down to the left to Off

#2 Start, Settings, Control Panel, Double click on Network Connections.
Double click on Dialup Adapter. Click on the Advanced tab. Right click on your internet connection icon and choose Properties.
Under the modem name, click on Configure. Remove the check in the box for Enable Modem Speaker.

Logo changed for IE and OE in upper right corner

You can have any image you want in that upper right corner. You might see the 'e' picture, or you might see the xp flag there...or something else. Here's how to change it:
In regedit, navigate your way to all of the following and change the location of the present image to the image and name you want to use. If the key is NOT listed in the registry, then right click on the right side and choose New, String Value. Give it the appropriate name (as listed below). Double click on it and put in the path for where your image is
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
"BigBitmap"="c:\folder\logo.bmp"
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar
"BrandBitmap"="c:\folder\logo.bmp"
"SmBrandBitmap"="c:\folder\logo.bmp"
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
"BigBitmap"="c:\folder\logo.bmp"
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar
"BrandBitmap"="c:\folder\logo.bmp"
"SmBrandBitmap"="c:\folder\logo.bmp"

WinZip saving a zip link instead of opening it

I use the Internet Browser Support Add-On for WinZip. It is no longer supported by WinZip, but it still works great.
It's an add-on that allows you to click on a .zip file and have it automatically saved to a location of your choice.
If you want this add on, send me a message and I'll see what I can do to get it to you

However: When things go wrong and it no longer saves a zip file, but just opens it when you click on a zip link on a web site, here's the fix:
Open Regit and go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Nico Mak Computing\WinZip\InternetBrowserSupportAddOn
delete the file called WZIEBS
Then delete the subfolder key of: IBS_FILES
